Extract

Two black cars suddenly pulled up the front drive.  She ducked out of sight, squatting on the ground like a common thief.  They were here already, sooner than she thought, and she didn’t know whether to stay or run.  She eyed the maple tree not far away and slithered over to it, practically crawling on all fours.  From that vantage point, she stood up and peeked around the tree.

She couldn’t see the men get out of the cars or approach the front door, but the images of such played out in her mind.  She also imagined if they weren’t granted entrance, they would simply barge through the door and begin their thorough search.  

For years, she’d been able to conceal her identity and follow the path she was born to take.  She felt safe and secure here and had almost forgotten about the danger that completely engulfed her past, but it had finally caught up to her.

When a large man in a dark suit and hat opened the back door, she stiffened against the tree and held her breath.  Beads of sweat started dripping down her temples, and her heart raced so fast she thought she might faint.  

But as she waited there immersed in utter fear, she felt like a coward.  Years ago, she had decided if this moment came and there was even a slim chance someone could get hurt because of her, she would give herself up.  In truth, she had lived far longer than she ever expected and had been blessed with so many peaceful years.  

That’s when she realized the selfishness of her actions.  She closed her eyes and took several deep breaths.  Once her shoulders relaxed, she held her head high and stepped away from the tree into plain sight.  

Someone called to the man from the back door.  She couldn’t hear what was said, but the man standing in the yard shouted back and headed inside without noticing her there.  As soon as he disappeared, she saw Lopez stick his head out one of the windows and frantically motion for her to leave.

It took a few seconds before her legs stopped shaking so she could run.  And run she did, as fast as she could down the dirt path through the forest surrounding the property, not having any idea where she would go.
